What Is Janmakshar Matching?

Janmakshar is simply the Gujarati and Marathi word for a birth chart — the same thing most of North India calls a Kundali. So when a family says they want a Janmakshar match done before a wedding is finalised, they mean exactly what a Hindi-speaking family means by Kundali Milan, and what a Tamil or Telugu family might call Jataka matching. The tradition, the calculation, and the eight Kootas being compared are identical everywhere. Only the word changes from region to region.

Janmakshar Matching itself is a comparison of two people's Moon positions at the moment they were born — their Rashi, their Nakshatra, and how the two charts sit against each other across eight traditional categories, together worth 36 points. It's the same Ashtakoota system Vedic astrology has used for generations, and it's why you'll sometimes hear it called Guna Milan, 36 Guna matching, or Janmakshar Melapak instead. Whatever name your family uses, the process behind it doesn't change.

We built Janmakshar because most matching tools bury this exact process under horoscopes, tarot readings, and a constant push to book a paid consultation before you've even seen your score. This site does one thing: it calculates your Janmakshar match, explains what each part of the score actually means in plain language, and gets out of your way. There's no signup wall between you and your result, and your birth details are calculated in your own browser rather than stored on a server somewhere. The tool is available in English, Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati, since Janmakshar itself is a term rooted in exactly those languages — it seemed wrong to build a Gujarati-named tool and only offer it in English.

✦ How Janmakshar Matching Works ✦

Here's what actually happens when you press Check Janmakshar Match. First, the birth details for both people — date, time, and place — are read and validated, and the place of birth is resolved into exact coordinates and a time zone, since even a few minutes' difference in birth time can shift which Nakshatra someone falls into. From there, the tool calculates the Moon's position at that precise moment for both charts, converts it to the sidereal zodiac using the Lahiri Ayanamsa most Vedic calculations rely on, and works out each person's Rashi, Nakshatra, and Nakshatra Pada. Once both charts are known, the two are compared across the eight Kootas — each scored on its own traditional scale and added up to a total out of 36. A simplified Manglik check runs alongside this, shown separately from the Guna score since the two traditionally answer different questions. The whole thing takes a few seconds, and at the end you get a full breakdown, not just a number.

What Is 36 Guna Matching?

Ashtakoota — literally "eight aspects" — is the classical framework behind nearly every Kundali and Janmakshar matching system in use today. Each of the eight Kootas looks at a different dimension of compatibility, from temperament to health to plain physical attraction, and each carries a different number of points depending on how much traditional weight it's given.

That weighting isn't arbitrary. Nadi, which touches on health and progeny, carries more points than any other Koota — 8 out of 36 — because traditional texts treat it as the aspect most likely to cause real difficulty if it's mismatched. Varna, which speaks to spiritual temperament, carries just 1. A family that fixates on the total score alone can miss this; a 24/36 built on a strong Nadi match is a genuinely different situation from the same total built on a weak one.

Reading your result Koota by Koota, rather than only glancing at the total, is where most of the useful information actually lives. Two matches can land on the same overall score for very different reasons — one with a clean Nadi and a rough Bhakoot, another the other way around. Our result page breaks every Koota out individually for exactly this reason, alongside the total.

What Your Janmakshar Score Actually Means

A total above 18 out of 36 is generally the line families use as a baseline; anything from 24 to 32 is usually read as a strong match, and above 32 as an excellent one. Below 18, most traditional guidance leans toward caution, though even that isn't an absolute rule — cancellation exceptions exist for several of the Kootas, particularly Nadi and Bhakoot, and a knowledgeable elder or astrologer can sometimes explain why a lower score isn't as concerning as it looks on paper.

What the number can't do is predict a marriage. A high Guna score doesn't guarantee a happy one, and plenty of long, happy marriages exist with scores well under 18. Janmakshar Matching is one traditional input among the many things families actually weigh — values, circumstances, how two people communicate — not a verdict on its own. We say this plainly because it's true, not as a disclaimer to protect ourselves.
